Searching
for our "DREAM"
HOW:
Simple, sell our house in Essex and buy a house in Spain.
Let
me tell you and help you through the traumas and set backs as my wife, Sue and
I, Hugh sought our DREAM. How Hugh and Sue for the second time in their married
life 'emigrated' to a new country, first Hugh and Sue emigrated from Scotland to
England and now England to Spain.
EasyJet
took us to Alicante and the search began. We made a list of what we wanted and
remember the direct translation may not be what you think.
Our
Dream was
A
house that was in its own grounds, not too remote but far enough from the next
house so that the neighbours did not see all our empty wine bottles.
A
swimming pool or a house cheap enough so that we could build a pool.
Three
bedrooms and in a state that we could live in it.
A
resale property
We
were shown houses where you could shake hands with people on the next door
balcony, a house that just had a roof, and it was not till we entered the word
PRIVATE into the search that we found houses that were within our DREAM.
The
moral of course is to think hard as to what you dream for, Spain is huge, the
villages and towns are all different but pick an area and let an expert local
show you around, we did and hopefully we found our Dream. We placed our faith in
Christian and his sturdy Tata six seater, he drove, we looked, saw the
countryside, met people and saw oranges everywhere.
Back
home in Essex we beavered away at the sale of our house, success and then the
hard work started!
The
Estate Agent sold our house in three days with two buyers on the asking price.
The buyer and I agreed to use the Conveyancing Solicitors recommended by the
Estate Agency. 107 days later and still we are awaiting the finalisation of a
search. But success came at last and we are on our way on 27th April 2004.
Our
house was full of 18 years of living in one place, lots of beautiful items that
we had stored lovingly in the attic. Journey after journey to the recycling
centre and soon the attic was empty and a lot less to pack in the van for Spain.
Our life was then to be packed in cardboard boxes, wrapped in bubble foil and
sealed with sticky tape. We made a list of everything that was packed in the
first box, the second box, where the items came from for the third box and then
we said that this is a waste of energy, we will have to open them all anyway in
Spain, so now we have about 40 boxes all awaiting Tuesday morning.
We
had to say all our goodbyes, Sue was President of The Inner Wheel and had
experienced some wonderful moments with the club, it was a sad farewell, but we
are sure that there will be a steady stream of Inner Wheel friends to Spain. I
resigned as secretary of my Rotary Club, and also as the Web Master for the
London District 1130. We both felt very proud of District Governor Robert Hunter
when he met us in Spain. Robert and Audrey had hired a brand new Mercedes and
they followed Sue and I as we drove through Villajoyosa in the dark evening.
Robert was driving in his car totally illuminated as the inside light came on
with the headlights and he was unable to switch the light off. How many
Rotarians have had the honour of leading his District Governor through the
streets for all to see. Moral - Robert should always carry his chain of office,
what a waste of good publicity. I, like Sue, feel sure that we shall see many
Rotarians friends beating the path to our door in Spain.
The
car has been serviced, the route planned and replanned, after all www.maporama.com
says that it is only 2000 km's from Ilford to Xativa. The route is easy, cross
the channel, head south, turn right when you hit the Mediterranean and then keep
the sea on your left till we find Valencia
We
have been through many differing and challenging situations since we started on
our quest for a new DREAM in Spain and I cannot give
too much praise to David Edwards who has helped in every way, answered every
question, found an answer every phone call. What is an NIE, what does NIE stand
for, well we can tell you, NIE stands for "Ask David", what does the
road sign ITV mean, again it stands for "Ask David". We even asked
David to recommend a lawyer and even he is a "David" so when you come
to Spain the country is full of Davids!
